How do I use the S2 codes/stylesheets?

I can promise you, it's not that difficult. First you go to the customize area. (Manage > Customize)
  1. Under the tab Basics make sure you've checked the S2 box under the headline "Style Systems.

  2. Under the tab Look & Feel make sure you have the right layout selected under the headline "Layout & Language". For example if the codes you want to use are for Flexible Squares, make sure you pick Flexible Squares in the drop down menu.

  3. Under the tab Custom Options click the link that says "Custom CSS".

  4. If you have uploaded your stylesheet (make sure the filename ends with .css, and not .txt or something!!!) to another server, for example your domain or Geocities, paste the url to the stylesheet in the "Custom External Stylesheet URL" box. Make sure the Use layout's stylesheet(s) is set to Yes and the Use layout's stylesheet(s) when including custom... is set to No.

  5. If don't have anywhere to host your CSS, you paste all of the CSS in the Custom stylesheet textarea. Make sure the Use layout's stylesheet(s) is set to No and that the Use layout's stylesheet(s) when including custom... is set to Yes. Sometimes using this option makes does it so that your layout can't be centered, and that some customizations disappear, so I recommend uploading your stylesheet at some freeserver or something instead.

  6. Of course, before you upload your CSS you have to (or can) make other customizations so it looks best for your journal. Further customizations can be made in the other sections under the Custom Options tab, some stuff isn't defined in the CSS.

How do I add a header image?

I'm going to explain how to do it in Flexible Squares, as most of my overrides are for that particular layout.

At the bottom of the CSS you can find a part that looks like this:

.headerimage {
/* for formatting header image */
}

Replace that part with the following code:

.headerimage {
position: relative;
width: 700px;
height: 400px;
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
margin-bottom: 0px;
background-image: url("header.jpg");
background-repeat: no-repeat;
}

Explanations:

width: The width of the header image in pixels.
height: The height of the header image in pixels.
margin-bottom: The space you want to be between the header image and the outer box of style. If you want there to be no space you leave it at 0px.
background-image: The url to the header image.

Most of the time you don't need to edit the other parts, but if your layout is for example aligned to the right, you have to edit some of the margin parts.

Also, you need to edit one more thing in your stylesheet, if you want the outermost box to align with your layout. This is an example from one of my stylesheets. Find the #content part in your CSS. It should look something like this depending on how the CSS is customized:

#content
{
width: 568px;
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
background-color: #ededed;
border: 1px solid #ededed;
padding: 15px;
}

I'm talking about the width in this case, as you may have figured out. In the example above the header image width would be 600px. In the #content your width should always be your header images width (for example 600px) - 32. (600 - 32 = 568px) to make it align. It's because of the outermost box, so.. If you header image was 700 pixels the width in the above part should be 668px (700 - 32 = 668px). Got it?

If your layout doesn't align with your header, make sure you've edited this part correctly before asking any questions.

How do I add a link list?

Some S2 layouts support a link list, that is mainly located in the sidebar. You can use it to display other links than the one in the navigation (header menu, aka the links that leed to your profile, friends page, etc). If you go to this page, you can add your links there, just follow the instructions.

Do you require credit?

Yes, if you use any of my overrides or other resources, credit is required. You don't have to credit colour schemes though, I can't actually say you have to credit them if you don't want to, they're mainly there for inspiration and ideas. You can add a thank you for them though, if you want. :)

How do I credit you?

It's all explained here. At the post you can also find some link buttons and codes.

What rules are there if I want to use your stuff?

The rules are placed in the userinfo (here), and a summary of the rules is located in each post containing some overrides, goodies or colourschemes, so just read them before taking anything.

I've installed the codes and my layout looks weird, or it isn't centered. What's wrong?

It may be because of several reasons. Firstly, if you have a Plus account and the ads have been added to your journal, the layout might work differently because of them.

Another reason might be the new navigation bar Livejournal has started to use. It might screw up your layout. No worries. :) You can turn it off at your journal or community by going to this page. If you want to turn it off in one of your communities, just select the right community from the drop down menu.

If you've made any changes to the codes you might have done something wrong, so trace your steps back and try seeing what may have caused it.

Are your overrides compatible with free and/or paid accounts?

Yes, my overrides are usually compatible in both free accounts and paid accounts, if something else isn't stated. The comments page is usually customized in the CSS, so that should be no problem.

I use IE and your overrides look nothing like the preview. Help!

That's because my overrides are never tested using Internet Explorer, they are "designed for Mozilla Firefox". I usually try to check them in IE aswell, just to see that there isn't anything really really wrong. They take coding a bit differently and there is some neat stuff that only works in Firefox. Why haven't you switched yet?

How do I add a blurb/free text?
  1. Again, go the Customization area. (Manage > Customize)

  2. Select the Custom Options tab.

  3. Click on the Sidebar link.

  4. There somewhere should be a box where you can write your free text or several ones if you use for example Smooth Sailing.

Only Paid Users can use HTML in their blurbs, remember that!
